Social media posts, comments, likes, and shares have gotten a lot of people in trouble with their places of employment, at school, and even at home. Let’s face it; social media can be good, but it can also be a hindrance when it comes to dealing with a child custody case in Tennessee.
If you are in the midst of a child custody case, you should avoid all of the following when using your social media accounts:
- Photos or posts that show you using alcohol or drugs (even if you have prescriptions)
- Angry venting about your former spouse or the other parent of your child
- Sharing any information about your new relationship
- Changing your relationship status on your accounts to single prior to a divorce being finalized
Always ensure that the privacy settings on all of your social media accounts are set to private, but remember that social media posts can be submitted by opposing counsel – and that nothing you delete is ever really gone. It’s also a good idea to unfriend your spouse and their family members if you haven’t already. Never share any information about the divorce or child custody case on social media.
Your social media posts can impact your child custody case
Whether you want to believe it or not, anything you post on social media can have an impact on your child custody case. The court can easily be swayed in favor of your spouse if it looks like you’re an unfit parent, or have committed an act of fraud.
Think of it this way: if you’re about to write something that can be taken out of context, your best bet is not to write it at all. To be safe, refrain from using social media until your legal issues are resolved. This includes posting about sports, work, or anything else you might feel is harmless. It doesn’t take much to spin anything you post against you in an effort to make you look bad.
